Breast cancer is a physically, emotionally, and psychologically exhausting battle. The dramatic change in the appearance of your breasts after a mastectomy is discouraging for many women, especially after undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
At The Breast Cancer Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery, we are passionate about helping breast cancer survivors recover their confidence in their appearance again through state-of-the-art breast reconstruction. Since breast cancer affects every person differently, you may be left with unique defects in your breasts that will need to be treated using specific techniques. For an initial consultation to discuss the specifics of your reconstructive treatment, please call 720-457-4461 today.
Radiation and Breast Reconstruction
Depending on what type of tumor you have, radiation therapy may be used in your cancer treatment process. Unfortunately, radiation therapy affects the surrounding normal tissues in your body as well as the cancer cells. The changes in these normal tissues after radiation can be significant, including:
- Loss of elasticity
- Limited wound healing
- Limited aesthetic results for breast reconstruction
If you have had radiation therapy, implant-based reconstruction will come with a significantly higher complication rate for you. Because of this elevated complication rate, our Colorado breast reconstruction surgeons recommend natural autologous reconstruction for women who have a history of radiation therapy. The use of sophisticated tissue flap techniques have achieved excellent success and natural-looking results for many of our patients.
The Benefits of Fat Grafting
Fat grafting is a technique that involves removing fat from one location of your body to another. We use fat grafting to enhance the results of breast reconstruction – both autologous and implant-based. On many occasions, the edges of a breast implant may be visible through the breast skin, or there may be contour deformities, divots, or excess scarring. Fat grafting can improve the appearance of all of these issues and more.
Since there is a limit to the amount of fat that can be transferred safely, larger defects may require more than one procedure in order to obtain the best results. One of the major benefits of fat grafting is that body contouring can be performed in the area where fat is removed. This area is liposuctioned, giving patients an opportunity to improve a body area that they are unhappy with while improving the breast contour at the same time.
