Advantages of the DIEP Flap Procedure

The DIEP flap (deep inferior epigastric perforator) is a tissue flap of skin, blood vessels and fat that can be harvested from your abdomen and moved to your chest to reconstruct the breasts following mastectomy. This form of reconstructive breast surgery is known as an autologous tissue method, as opposed to breast reconstruction using saline or silicone breast implants.

For the right candidate, the DIEP flap method has several advantages, including:

  • Uses your own natural tissue. No artificial material is used.
  • Avoids any risks that would be associated with breast implants.
  • Has a tummy tuck-like effect on the abdominal area by removing excess fat and skin
  • Your reconstructed breasts will look and feel optimally natural
  • Reduces the risk of hernia associated with the TRAM flap

Certain women are good candidates for this type of reconstructive breast surgery, while other women are better candidates for implant-based reconstruction or other types of autologous reconstruction. The only way to know for sure is to visit our experienced plastic surgeons
