Breast Reconstruction Statistics for 2016

According to the latest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast reconstruction procedures increased 3 percent last year compared to the previous year:

  • 2016: 109,256
  • 2015: 106,338

These numbers reflect only those breast reconstructions performed by plastic surgeons who are members of ASPS. The actual number of all breast reconstructions performed in the US last year is probably even higher.

Furthermore, the ASPS reports a 39 percent increase in breast reconstructions since the year 2000. In 2016, there were 18,778 breast implant removal procedures among reconstructive patients, which was a 5 percent increase from the previous year. There is a wide array of reasons a woman may decide to remove the implants used in her initial reconstruction: She may decide to opt instead for tissue flap reconstruction, or she may not like the final look and feel of the implants and may opt for a different type. Some women experience complications requiring implant removal.
