The BRA Day USA organization and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has created a downloadable guide to help breast reconstruction patients plan their recovery. The planner is assembled from tips from plastic surgeons who have cared for breast reconstruction patients, as well as from the patients themselves. It includes a variety of helpful and insightful pointers, such as:
- Assembling a "home team" of friends, family and caregivers to help you out during your recovery.
- What "pre-surgery primping" is okay to do before your procedure, such as shaving. The planner points out many of these primping activities may be difficult to perform in the days right after your surgery.
- How to shower after surgery while protecting the incisions.
- A tentative timeline of how long it will take to heal based on the technique used to reconstruct your breasts.
The introduction to the planner does point out that you should always rely on your breast surgeon for information regarding your recovery. If you find something in the planner that contradicts or otherwise doesn't gel with what you have been told by your reconstructive breast surgeon, be sure to discuss it with your surgeon before going against what you have been told. Each person is unique, and your plastic surgeon knows you and your health in an individualized manner.
At the Breast Center at Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery, our plastic surgeons and our entire team are committed to providing you with attentive aftercare. Take a look at this planner and feel free to discuss it with our surgeons. We'll let you know which items pertain to you and make sure it follows our instructions for a successful recovery.
