If you are a candidate for breast reconstruction surgery using implants, you may be asked by your physician to decide whether you prefer saline or silicone breast implants. Both types have been determined to be safe for implantation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

During a consultation with one of our experienced reconstructive breast surgeons, you can learn about each type's characteristics, such as:

For saline implants, the cost is often less expensive than the silicone variety. One downside is that some women find that saline implants have a slightly less natural look and feel than silicone gel.

For silicone implants, the cost may be higher, but the result is a more natural look and feel. Women who have silicone implants should have routine MRIs to rule out silent ruptures that may occur.

There is no way to know which one is right for you without first discussing your options with one of our surgeons. We want you to feel empowered to make informed decisions about reconstructive breast surgery, and we will provide you with the information and support you need to make those decisions.
