An article in the July issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery® (which is the official publication of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons) highlights the various benefits of a single-stage, "one and done" breast reconstruction procedure for certain women who are good candidates. In this approach, a nipple-sparing mastectomy is performed. The breast implant is then immediately placed, in the same procedure.
The article points out a few of the advantages of this breast reconstruction approach:
- Fewer office appointments, since the breast expander step is eliminated
- Faster return to your normal activities
- Preservation of the nipple-areola complex
This single-stage approach is still relatively new, and shows the horizon of progressive breast reconstruction techniques. It's important to know that only some women are good candidates for the current single-stage procedure, and the study this article is talking about included a limited number of women (27 reconstructions, specifically). As experienced reconstructive breast surgeons, the plastic surgeons at The Breast Center are personally committed to helping you find all of the options that will work for your goals, health and expectations.
