Understanding Your Options for Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy

Woman considering implant reconstruction DenverYou may be interested in having breast reconstruction after your mastectomy to help reclaim your figure and self-image. It is important to know that you have several choices for how it can be done.

Our board-certified plastic surgeons offer advanced breast reconstruction using implants, autologous tissue, and a combination of the two techniques. Keep reading to learn more about each approach.

Implant-Based Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction using implants is a leading option. It involves placing an implant of your desired shape and size below the skin to create a breast mound. This method is widely available and is something that many surgeons are trained to perform.

Implant reconstruction is done in one of two ways. A tissue expander can be placed at the time of mastectomy, or after mastectomy, to gradually stretch the tissue in preparation for the final implant. Other times, expanders are not necessary, and the implant can be placed on the day of mastectomy surgery.

Autologous Reconstruction

Autologous breast reconstruction is an increasingly popular choice that uses your own tissue instead of an implant. It involves taking a flap of excess skin and fat from one part of your body and transferring it to the breast region.

This category of reconstruction tends to produce the most natural look and feel. It also offers the longest-lasting results. However, it is not as widely available as implant reconstruction because it requires providers to have advanced microsurgical training.

Combining Reconstruction Techniques

Implant and autologous reconstruction techniques are sometimes combined to create a full and flattering breast shape. In this scenario, you would first undergo an autologous procedure. Then in the future, you could choose to have an implant placed in an effort to add more volume to the reconstructed breast.
