Removing Breast Implants following Reconstructive Surgery

breast implants

Following an implant-based breast reconstruction, you may at some point decide you want to have the breast implants removed. If you choose to do so, our experienced plastic surgeons can perform the procedure. Some of the reasons women choose to have their implants removed include the following:

  • You previously chose breast implants but now you want to pursue other options
  • You experienced breast implant failure
  • Your body has rejected the breast implants, and may be painful
  • You developed cellulitis following implant-based breast reconstruction

At The Breast Center Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery, our compassionate plastic surgeons can revise the results of a previous reconstructive breast surgery.

Possible Alternatives to Implants for Breast Reconstruction

Some women wish to have their breast implants removed with no further intention to reconstruct their breasts. We believe you deserve to have clear information about all of your options. If you are planning to have your implants removed, there are alternatives to breast implants that may be a good option for you.

Autologous tissue flaps use your own skin to reconstruct your breasts. This natural technique uses no artificial materials and allows you to restore a positive body image without the complications you experienced with implants. There are several types of tissue flaps:

  • DIEP flap
  • SGAP flap
  • SCIA flap
  • SIEA flap
  • TUG flap
  • TRAM flap
  • Free TRAM flap
  • Latissimus flap

There are different types because flaps are grafted from different areas of the body and attached using one of two techniques. Pedicle flaps are grafted without their blood supply. The blood supply is tunneled to the new breasts. Free flaps are grafted along with their blood supply. Our surgeons use microsurgery to attach the blood supply and flap (microsurgery is a highly specialized operation performed by a select number of plastic surgeons).

The DIEP flap is the most common. Many of our patients have had their breast implants removed and their breasts reconstructed with DIEP flaps. Dr. Jeremy Williams and Dr. Christopher Williams combined have performed thousands of these flap procedures. All of our surgeons trained extensively to become adept at performing the highly technical DIEP flap procedure.
