As a final stage of breast reconstruction, you may choose one or more breast shaping procedures to refine your results. One of the options is nipple reconstruction, which may follow an implant-based or autologous tissue-based reconstruction.
There are a few ways this can be accomplished, and the board-certified plastic surgeons at The Breast Center Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery look forward to discussing these options with you as part of your overall breast reconstruction plan. Nipple Reconstruction after Mastectomy
A breast shaping procedure, nipple reconstruction surgery is usually performed after the breast reconstruction is complete. It can also be performed in our office, under local anesthesia, sometime after your breast reconstruction surgery.
There are several ways to perform the procedure, one of which will be the best fit for your aesthetic goals. One of the main techniques involves using your own tissue to create a mound that looks like a nipple. Oftentimes this tissue comes from the reconstructed breast itself. The nipple will not have sensitivity like your nipples did before reconstruction, but many women feel better about their final results when the breasts have a visible nipple.
In a treatment known as areola pigmentation, tattooing is used to reproduce the appearance of an areola, which not only completes the look of the nipple-areola complex, but also helps conceal any scars left by incisions to create the nipple. This pigmentation process takes place under a local anesthetic.
Breast Shaping Techniques Tailored to Your Goals
Nipple reconstruction is just one of several finalization procedures. In addition to areola pigmentation, there is also breast shaping, sometimes called fat grafting, which involves using your own fat cells to augment, shape and refine the contour and volume of reconstructed breasts.
Our ultimate goal is to restore your feelings of femininity and confidence following mastectomy. We want to help you achieve your own personal goals for breast reconstruction, and we are personally committed to informing you of all of your options so you can choose what is right for you.
