What to Expect During Your Consultation

Knowing what to expect during your consultation will help you feel more comfortable when the day arrives. This initial visit is a chance to meet our surgeons and staff, receive individualized recommendations, and get answers to any questions you may have. You are not under any pressure to make final decisions regarding your reconstruction.

Breast reconstruction consultation room in DenverWhen you arrive, you will meet with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. He will take the time to establish a complete picture of your current situation and your treatment history. He will also discuss your concerns and goals in detail to understand what you expect from the surgery.

After a brief examination, your plastic surgeon will go over the options available to you. He will relate each procedure and technique to your body, giving you a realistic representation of what to expect. You will also have the opportunity to view before and after photos. From there, your surgeon will discuss the benefits and consideration associated with each choice, so you can begin to make an informed decision.

Next, you will meet with your Patient Navigator, who will start developing a treatment plan with you. She will go over the out-of-pocket costs that you can expect to pay, as well as insurance coverage and financing options. If you are ready to move forward, your navigator can coordinate surgery with your general surgeon, oncologist, and other specialists you may be seeing during this time.

When I met with Dr. Chris Williams, he spent an extensive amount of time with me, getting every detail of my background and giving me options, and choices and results I may have. – P.D.

Common Consultation Questions

There will be ample time for you to ask questions and talk about any concerns you may have. We recommend that you make a list of everything that you are curious about, including:

  • Am I a good candidate for this procedure?
  • What will I need to do to ensure the best results?
  • How will you perform the procedure?
  • What can I expect from the recovery period?

We also encourage you to ask questions to get to know our plastic surgeons. They will gladly go over their qualifications, experience, and training. During this time, they will also provide information regarding their hospital privileges and our state-licensed, The Joint Commission-accredited surgical center.

Benefits of Meeting With a Plastic Surgeon Early On

If you have recently received a breast cancer or high-risk diagnosis, you may think that it is too early to meet with a plastic surgeon to discuss reconstruction. That is not the case. In fact, thinking about reconstruction at the time of your diagnosis can be extremely beneficial.

Most importantly, early planning for reconstruction can potentially improve your cosmetic outcome. By weighing your reconstruction options before undergoing a lumpectomy or mastectomy, you will have access to a wider range of techniques and procedures. And just like it is never too early to meet with a breast reconstruction surgeon, it is never too late. There are options for improving your initial reconstruction or rebuilding your breasts years after cancer surgery.
