What Is a DIEP Flap Reconstruction?

A DIEP Flap reconstruction is a type of reconstructive procedure that uses a woman’s own tissue to help recreate the breast after a mastectomy. DIEP stands for the deep inferior epigastric perforator, which is the main blood vessel that is relocated during the procedure. The skin and fat are often taken from the lower abdomen, which is then used to reconstruct the breast. A benefit of this procedure is that none of the muscles are removed from the abdomen.

Am I a Good Candidate?

This procedure is great for many women. The best candidates include individuals who are overall healthy, are in need of breast reconstruction, and do not smoke. If you’re looking for a more balanced look to your chest, and want clothes to rest in a more balanced way, this procedure is great for you. This is also a great procedure for women looking to improve their self-esteem.

This procedure is not ideal for women who have already had DIEP flap reconstruction on the other breast, as it can only be done once. Women who do not have enough extra fat or tissue in their abdomen do not make good candidates as well, as this is needed to do the procedure. Women who have had previous abdominal surgery may not be good candidates either.

Recovery & Care

After your reconstructive procedure, you may be required to stay in the hospital for two to five days. Your healthcare provider will get you more detailed instructions on expected recovery time, activities to avoid, what garments you’ll need to wear, and more.
