What Does Flap Reconstruction Look Like?

For some women, a breast implant-based breast reconstruction is not an ideal option. Some women prefer a reconstructive procedure that uses only natural tissue, in which case a flap-based technique is ideal. You may also hear the technique referred to as “autologous tissue flap” reconstruction. It uses a section of your own tissue to re-create the breast.

The flap of skin and fat – and muscle, in some cases – is taken from a certain area of your body, often the abdomen or back. There are various types of flaps, based on the body area they are harvested from, and whether they are dissected with their blood source or have the blood vessels “tunneled” to the breasts.

The DIEP flap is a “free flap” that is dissected from the body along with its blood supply. Our plastic surgeons are extensively trained and experienced in the state-of-the-art microsurgery required to reattach the blood supply. DIEP flaps are often the most natural, most durable and long-lasting autologous reconstruction options. The surgeons at The Breast Center Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery have performed over 600 DIEP flap procedures.
