Candidates for One-Stage Breast Reconstruction in Denver
In a traditional implant-based breast reconstruction, a surgeon will place a tissue expander beneath the chest wall after the mastectomy. Our plastic surgeon then periodically fills the expander with saline, thus stretching the tissue in the area and making it ready for breast implants.
However, some women can skip the tissue expanding process entirely and receive breast implants immediately after their mastectomy.
Women who are an ideal candidate for a direct-to-implant breast reconstruction:
- Usually have smaller breasts, as the tissue does not need to be expanded
- Does not have a history of radiation to the breast or chest wall
- Is undergoing a prophylactic mastectomy
If you are undergoing a mastectomy because of a tumor, the characteristics of the tumor also play a role in determining if you are a candidate for this procedure.
How a One-Stage Breast Reconstruction Procedure Works
In a direct-to-implant breast reconstruction, a general surgeon will perform your mastectomy. Once that is complete, our plastic surgeon will step in and place an implant to create two breast.
We can often perform a one-stage implant-based breast reconstruction with a nipple-sparing mastectomy. If that’s the case, you’re finished with the entire process and will need no more procedures, provided you don’t want fat grafting for subtle breast shaping later.
If we don’t perform a nipple-sparing mastectomy the only procedures you will need after your breast reconstruction are the nipple reconstruction and areola pigmentation procedures.
With the one-stage, direct-to-implant breast reconstruction, we can spare you from weeks of difficult and often uncomfortable tissue expanding procedures. You can achieve your post-mastectomy breast reconstruction goals immediately.
